If You Have A Uterus, Its Use is Now State Controlled

From CNN: PIERRE, South Dakota (AP) -- Gov. Mike Rounds signed legislation Monday banning nearly all abortions in South Dakota, setting up a court fight aimed at challenging the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

Choice has been outlawed in South Dakota. With the Supreme Court being the way it is, Choice could become illegal in the entire United States within a year.

Crooks & Liars has the footage of an interview in which South Dakota Republican state senator Bill Napoli defends his vote for the law to take away a woman's ability to make descisions about her own body even in cases of rape or incest or where the health of the woman, including her ability to have children in the future, is threatened.

Rep. Napoli's defense for not including an exception for rape was mind-blowingly ignorant. In a truely traumatic rape (more on Napoli's definition later) the “threatening the mother’s life” provision would cover the abortion. His reasoning shows not only his contempt for a woman’s autonomy over her own body, but also his stunning vision of what really constitutes a life-altering rape:

"A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life."
That's right. If you're not religous, your rape doesn't matter. If you're not a virgin, you're rape doesn't matter. According to Napoli, if the only person a woman had sex with in her life was her husband and she was raped, that wouldn't count either. Only Christian Virgins can be raped.

Don't forget that South Dakota allows a pharmasist the ability to refuse to fill perscriptions for emergency birth control, making unintended and unwanted pregnancies more likely.

So what is Napoli's solution to the problem of unwanted pregnancies?
"When I was growing up, here in the wild west, if a young man got a girl pregnant out of wedlock, they got married and the whole darn neighborhood was involved in that wedding. I mean, you just didn’t allow that sort of thing to happen, you know; I mean, they wanted that child to be brought up in a home with two parents, you know, that whole story. And so I happen to believe that can happen again… I don’t think we’re so far beyond that that we can’t go back to that."
Date-raped by an boyfriend? Marry the guy and settle down for life with the man. Never mind that your new fiance RAPED YOU and that if you reported him to the police, he'd spend at least a few years in jail. It's best for the child - unless the father's in jail, right Bill? Raped by a stranger? I guess the same thing applies? Does it, Rep. Napoli? What if the girl was raped by her cousin, uncle, or father? There's no exception for incest, so is the pregnant woman supposed to marry her cousin, uncle, father, or brother to raise up the child in a good, Christian home, just like back in the good old days?

Fuck you, Bill Napoli. And fuck all the other ignorant, patriarchical assholes like you who would deny a woman the right to control her own body.
